I have been taking classes with Adam Douglass at NY Guitar Academy for almost two years. Hes an excellent instructor and gifted musician. He is very knowledgeable, friendly and shows lots of patience when dealing with his students. Even though I have my own tight schedule, I always try to attend his classes regularly since Adam’s teaching style is very efficient and effective for me to learn. Id strongly recommend NY Guitar Academy to anyone who is serious about learning guitar. Adam as well as other instructors are very friendly and you will right away feel their warm welcome as you enter the school. Whenever my schedule is available, I am determined to take more classes with Adam at NY Guitar Academy to further strengthen my skills.

I decided I wanted to take individual electric guitar classes, so I booked a 45 min class at 3 different places to try them out. My first class was with Adam at New York Guitar Academy, and Im really happy it was because I wouldnt have understood anything with the teachers at the other schools. Adam explains everything really well (general concepts and more detailed stuff) and it feels like hes actually prepared for the class. The other teachers just asked me what do you want to play but I wanted something a little more structured. I ended up going back to New York Guitar Academy and have been taking classes there for 10 months and I love it. Adam is also really friendly, encouraging and makes you feel comfortable. Sorcha who manages the schedules is also really great, so I highly recommend this place.

Having had experience with a number of other instructors and guitar schools, I can offer no higher recommendation than NY Guitar Academy. The instructors are first rate professionals who are the best at what they do AND who are at the peaks of their careers. They teach in innovative ways, are incredibly insightful and patient, are mindful of their students needs, and provide a well structured and nurturing environment for learning. Everything about the academy is thoughtful and well executed, from group and private lessons to jam sessions and student showcase performances. Coming into the academy for lessons is a pleasure - they are centrally located within footsteps of Herald Square and they supply the guitars so you dont have to lug yours into and out of the city.I have been taking lessons for over a year now and never thought I would progress so rapidly in such a dauntingly challenging genre as Flamenco. In one year, I went from learning scales and basic strumming techniques to playing traditional Flamenco standards and original pieces by some of the masters. But my progress is very typical of the student experience here. The instructors provide the ideal scaffolding for success. If youre willing to put in the work, youll be amazed at what you can achieve at the New York Guitar Academy.

I studied Classical Guitar over 25 years ago. A few months ago I decided to go back and take lessons again, but this time I was looking to combine the Flamenco style in my playing. Jason was the perfect teacher for me because he has the ability to teach and play both styles with the same ease. Jasons step-by-step approach has been so helpful; it has allowed me to improve my skills and develop new techniques. He is a very encouraging and supportive teacher. I am enjoying playing the guitar again. Now I play differently and I listen to guitar music differently.

I took Flamenco guitar lessons with Elysa for a year until I had to move out of the country. She is an amazing guitar player and a very flexible, supportive teacher who caters to the students abilities and preferences. I brought back a video recording every week for practice and was able to go through a variety of material and skills in a short time. I am so glad to have found this place and I enjoyed every single lesson I had here. The environment is intimate and friendly so it is very comfortable to have lessons here. I also bought my first flamenco guitar at the guitar parlour with Jasons help and advice. I will miss this place!

Ive been taking lessons with Phil at the New York Guitar Academy for the past seven months, and have found him to be a wonderful teacher and the academy a welcoming environment. Phil clearly has a knack for knowing just when to introduce new material and when to direct the student toward a particular point of technique. Throughout the process, I have felt encouraged and challenged, and in just the right measure of each. On top of his sensitivity as a teacher, Phil is a soulful musician who is able to demonstrate delicate beauties that reside within the heart of the guitar. My experience at the academy has been a pleasure and I would wholeheartedly recommend it, and, in particular Phil, to other aspiring students.

I am a intermediate beginner, still learning a lot of the basics. I went through 3 teachers prior to ADAM DOUGLASS at NY Guitar Academy. Adam is a rare teacher. He is perceptive enough to feel what direction a lesson needs to go in order to get the best from his students. He also has enough experience as a player and teacher to know what type of learner his student is and tailor his approach accordingly. Adam is also funny and cool and makes the lesson both challenging and blast at the same time. He also has a phenomenal jazz trio: The Adam Douglass Trio. My 8-year-old son is now in his second eight-week-class at the Guitar Academy, and we couldnt be happier. Both his first and now his current instructor have been great: they teach songs that he enjoys practicing at home (and we enjoy listening to! Bob Marley, the Beatles, etc.), they encourage him, and they point out errors in a supportive way. Were so pleased to have found the Guitar Academy and highly recommend it to anyone looking for very reasonably priced lessons from professional, patient instructors. I should also mention that while the website says classes can be up to four (I think) there have only been two students - my son and one other - each time, making it virtually like a private lesson.

Ive been taking classes on and off here for a few years now, and its been a great experience. Ive primarily taken classes with Adam, who has always been friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful.Ive mostly taken group rock classes, where the song selection has been diverse, but consistently strong. Weve learned a lot general classics, some of my personal favorites, as well as some really cool new-to-me tunes that have expanded my musical knowledge. Whatever the song, Adam does a great job of tailoring them to the techniques we are trying to learn, as well as the individual interests and skill levels of the students.Pace of the classes is great, too. When were doing well, we move along quickly, and when were struggling with a new technique or concept, Adam slows the class down so we can focus on the things that are tripping us up.Ive done a few classes with other NYGA instructors as well, and theyve all been good, too. The rates are reasonable, the cancellation policies are fair, and the staff is always a pleasure to work with. Just a positive experience all around.Id highly recommend this place to anyone who is serious about learning guitar. While Ive still got a way to go before I consider myself an expert, NYGA has helped me advance so much faster than I ever did when trying to learn the guitar on my own, from books, or even from online tutorials. The value of hands-on, real-time feedback from a solid instructor cant be understated.

Thrilled with my lessons! I have been taking Flamenco guitar lessons at New York Guitar Academy with Elysa for about 9 months. I had been playing guitar for many years and was feeling stale with my searching for lessons/songs on YouTube to try and learn. I dont sing and I dont have time for a band so I need to be challenged with my level of playing. I happened to search on the internet for lessons in NYC and came across the NYGA. I was very intrigued with the idea of playing flamenco. I always loved the sound but never knew how to approach it on my own. I also liked the idea of the lower cost lessons in a group format. I could not be happier. I enjoy the camaraderie of the group and find it helps push me. The passion Elysa has for the music is contagious and it is very inspiring. She is also very patient! I’ve never had a chance to learn and play any instruments before I took my first guitar class in last September at NYGA. The reason why I take NYGA’s class is really simple: some months ago I unintentionally found a piece of video clip of Jason and Elysa’s performance and I just thought that WOW! they are soooo cool! I just want to learn this instrument with them! And I have really enjoyed the time playing guitar there with Jason. To me, he is not only a professional musician but also a great teacher. He always always encouraged us even though we sometimes played not quite well. I also like the flexibility we have in the class because he always gave us few choices before starting a new song (based on our level) and let us choose the one we like the most to learn (I know some guitar instructors just use one boring textbook and force their student to finish it but unaware that they are killing students’ interests in enjoying the music). I haven’t had a chance to have a course with Elysa but I never forget that once she just kindly join our pre-class practice and I luckily had a chance to play my favorite song “Vals Pica Pica” with her. It’s really a wonderful experience learning guitar here at NYGA!Sean

For example, well deconstruct my favorite guitar solos/riffs and hell explain why each portion fits the relevant scales and how I can improvise with them. The beauty of this method is that Im having fun playing my favorite Petrucci/SRV/Montgomery pieces AND actually knowing the modes and where they fit.Jason and the rest of the team run a really great operation here - everyones friendly and theyve always been very accommodating when Ive needed to postpone lessons to fit my schedule.Could not recommend NYGA highly enough
