Giving a 3 for the simple fact that people arent going too hard with these draconious mandates and the staff is for the majority welcoming and nice. The bad thing is people arent standing up against these draconious mandates. Masks and vaccine mandates not only do more damage than good but are completely against our rights to even back. If you get your science from the mainstream media and CNN then you are failing society by going along with it. Absolutely ridiculous how willing people are to give up their rights and feed into lies about the PLANdemic when theyve told on themselves so many times

I go here 2-3 times per week because its close. Its a good store and most of the people there are friendly but the whole store smells bad. I saw them cleaning all the freezers out one day months ago & it seems that rotten smell stayed.

Every time there is a price error in items I buy :(Edit: I was waiting in line for a checkout for about 15 minutes while cashier was serving another customer (who had 3 separate orders and also having troubles with incorrect prices). Then I finally come to the register and cashier tells me he’s going to go have lunch! It was a joke apparently... when he scanned my items there was another price error... sorry, this store is not for me. I wonder if the management heard about something like a competitive advantage at all.

On a Saturday afternoon they only had two checkers. Safeway is really pushing for customers to use self checkout. I figure it is to save money on labor and the customer is in their own. Problem self checkout is problematic of the 6 self checkout 4 were having problems and waiting for assistance. So they were waiting for an employee to fix the problem. Net result is waiting.

Old store remodeled and enlarged from the old days. Vast improvement but surprised at limited stock BUT it is pandemic times as well

It was easy to find this store because it is on the main road that runs through San Mateo. The store is big in its expansion and so is the parking. You can only go in and out from one side of it. When I tried to hang a right to get out I couldnt do it only to find that theres a little hidden nook and I was like so impressed with that because if they let you sleep in the parking lot you just have to make sure you let the grocery store know that you are there after hours so that your car doesnt get impounded. Thats quite the thing cuz I have never seen something like that before. The grocery store itself is actually very neat and clean and because of this pandemic its extremely important and I appreciate the fact that they do keep a high standard.

Pretty normal, standard, but well-oiled operation. On the larger side, with well stocked shelves and well managed inventory. Also, I felt like the store was thoughtfully laid out, with the sweet aroma of the bakery welcoming you in the doors. Large produce department, but the quality of the fruit left something to be desired. I was planning to purchase a bag of oranges, but I couldnt find any that didnt contain at least 2 or 3 completely rotten ones inside. All in all, I think 4/5 stars is pretty fair.

This is the larger Safeway in San Mateo. They had everything I needed. And the daytime staff was super friendly and helpful.

Pretty standard Safeway. Its got a big selection and is kept relatively clean. Though this spot gets a lot of panhandlers and loiterers

Easy in and out just picked up a few items.

Wait in line for 15 minutes with my liquor, some other guy goes to self checkout with where there is no line, but you arent supposed to bring liquor to self checkout. Instead of having him go to the back of the line, the staff just lets him go right in front of me. Now I have to wait another 5 minutes just for him because he decides to strike up a long conversation with the cashier. This is like the 7th time this has happened.

I like going to there with my mom, everything isnt that expensive. They always have the stuff I want, and the ice cream area is not that cold and the ice cream is never melted. and my mom even works there.

I went to This Safeway for a sandwich and the staff were rude . I waited for 15 minutes to get the attention for one on the workers in the deli area . There were like 6 people and no one wanted to take my order . It was frustrating even the manager walked through and saw me and didn’t do anything. So disappointed. Then a couple of white people showed up in the deli were I was and one of the workers immediately took the order for them. I felt discriminated. It looks like if you are Latin they refuses to take your order but if white people show up they Immediately attend them.

Best ever. So clean.Sushi and chinese foods, they are so delicious.I have been eating there at least 3 days per week

Placed an order for a red velvet birthday cake and was told that there was no cake because whoever took the order misplaced the receipt. I work in retail so I understand that things happen, but I’m still disappointed nonetheless

This Safeway is the best Safeway of all in San Mateo. Why you may ask ? Because they have been the most friendly and have been consistently. I have shopped here for more than 15 years. Pam who works customer service is great, the bakery woman who has worked there for many years and she works at night. Bakery is the best and so is there Produce Dept. And, always plenty of parking. 😁

The pickup order system is great! You order on the app and drive up there, park in a pickup spot and call them. They come out quickly and load everything in the car. Its very quick and efficient. However, due to COVID situation, some items go out of stock. It would be nice if they had a way to update that in the app.

The personal who attended the Chinese food are very good but the rest the ones in charge of the deli 👎🏻 they can seeing you standing there but they keep chatting in the back

As always, a beautiful and super clean store, and fast transactions at the checkout stands.Friendly and knowledgeable people are always helpful to show you the item you are looking for, if letting you know which isle it is located at, isnt suffice.I noticed though, and this hasnt happened in a while since the pendemic outbreak; a lot af the shelves where half or 2/3 s empty. And Im not believing this hopefully temporary situation, to be any of the night stockers fault.Hopefully and probably a temporary condition! People tend to shop more before (veterans, in this case) holiday(s)!Happy shopping!

They changed their hour because the virus and I understand that but I got there at 9:50pm on Wednesday 10 minutes before they closed because I was getting off from my job too and I don’t want to be outside when I don’t need and they had the door lock a lady told me sorry we are closed. I understand everyone wants to go home but they shouldn’t say that they closed at 10:00pm when they have 2 people at the door saying they closed 10 minutes before and of course door was locked.

I understand we are living in weird times but this store seems disorganized and ghetto. The employees were all stocking tonight at 10:20pm and an employee almost hit my daughter with a box he threw our way. There was also 2 young guys that smelled like pot wandering around wearing no masks? Next time I go to a different store the employees are not helpful like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

This Safeway is in a great location, also one of many, easy to see from El Camino. Hardly ever out of stock and there is plenty of self checkout if your not into waiting in a checkstand line.

You can get the best ingredients here for cooking a variety of foods.

Ordinary slightly small Safeway with great access to public transit (the ECR). Wish it had bulk section ... it doesnt. Also too many confused/distracted people clogging up the narrow aisles, but hey, the bus stop is adjacent to the parking lot. Plus one star!

I have been using the drive up and go for a few weeks now, and it is just a horrible service. They are always missing huge portions of my order, they never answer when I call to say I am there for pick up. It is a really great idea, but I always leave frustrated by the lack of service and items. Guess I will go back to shopping in store.

Their pickup service is okay. They dont have a dedicated pickup service phone number though. I waited for about 10 minutes on their customer service line to let them know Ive arrived for pickup.

I go into this place probably three times a week at least I was treated with respect and dignity everybody seems so pleasant and nice anyways have what I like in there.

A great place for you to get groceries. However, today I only go the for my cash pickup through western union, but the staff named Molly, in the customer service ruined it at all, She has a very bad attitude and is very inefficient. A very simple money withdrawal process left me a bad impression of the store.
