The tamales were good, but to be honest no better than the frozen variety I might get from a supermarket. They also seemed like they had been pre-made and reheated since they came in little plastic containers, despite us dining in-store. It detracted from the experience and made it seem like we were eating a microwave meal.

As mentioned prior, I moved back to Austin and today we’re looking for an excellent tamale. As I browse through the web and called and spoke to each of the restaurants, we decided on Tamale House. I entered the restaurant and saw a wall of articles pertaining to the excellent tamales, now in expectation of a good product. We purchased six tamales at 5$ each; assured these tamales were huge and the best. They handed me a huge aluminum container that would probably hold 3 dozen or more regular size tamales. We were excited! Arriving home we could not wait to try these HUGE tamales. Well, unfortunately we were very disappointed…the flavor was fair, 90 percent of all the tamales is masa, and you get extra masa not attached to the tamale. The pork is dry. The bean and cheese had very very little cheese. I don’t know what tamales were served to warrant all the articles on the wall, however; I can probably assure you these were not the tamales.

Visiting from Ohio, and HAD to get tamales while I was here. I opted for the classic pork recipe, with queso and pickled jalapeños. I wanted some chips, but didnt see an option for a side, so I got a starter, which comes with a lifetime supply of chips and salsa for one. All of the staff seemed genuinely friendly.Good chips, decent salsa, tender tamale with great tasting pork (I thought was 2 average sized tamales, but it was one long one, in 2 halves), and spectacular queso. The jalapeños were a surprising highlight.Make sure you go in and get a parking validation code from the host before you go to the parking kiosk.

They must be struggling, because its just a bunch of canned beans, rice and nasty cheese presented in different ways. Got a chicken tamale too. It way 80% masa with barely any filling. They must have run out of lettuce too. Either that or crispy tacos now come with spinach. Waste of money, waste of time. What a shame because theyve been an east side staple for so long. Maybe not much longer.

I went here a few months ago but just needed to come back and make a review!! I absolutely love this authentic Tex Mex spot. I visited Austin and knew we needed to try it. This family owned restaurant has a beautiful patio for seating and delicious food!! The owners are the sweetest and the service was awesome.Austin has lots of little bugs so they provide you with bug spray haha! When I went they only had outdoor seating but you can probably sit inside if you are a tourist who’s not used to little buggies haha!!

We did a 2 hr bike ride on the Eastside and finished here with brunch. 11 of us had a variety of menu items and everyone raved about what they ate! The margaritas were exceptional - not too sweet or too strong which is getting harder to find outside of Maudies, Matts, and a few other restaurants in town. This place is the real deal! Coming from a woman who has lived on the border of Mexico and a resident of Austin for 28 yrs., I really appreciated Tamale Houses authenticity-- family-owned & operated = great quality, service, welcoming atmosphere, beautiful space. Food was delivered quickly, hot, and the portions were appropriate. Cant wait to go back

This place used to be amazing but boy did it go downhill. They have it set up so you have to sit and pay for your food online before anyone comes out to talk to you. Just another menu that you have to fill out by entering your credit card manually. Want to order something else? Please enter your credit card manually again. Not the dining experience I was looking for, uber eats is better. Also got this disgusting greasy goop, used to come here all the time this is so sad.

Some of the worst Mexican food Ive ever had. Not trying to bag on this place just being honest. Taco Bell literally is better than this place. For a restaurant to serve the kind of food they do and calling it Mexican should be an embarrassment. Service was beyond horrible when asking the server what we were getting she responded I dont know very indifferent and seemed almost put out that we were asking a question as we werent sure who was getting what when the order was delivered. Stay away from this place, save your money and your appetite. Now I know why every other restaurant Friday night on East 6th Street was busy except this place

Being originally from Los Angeles, I was looking for a restaurant to take a guest from LA. I happened to run into this restaurant and did not have very high expectations; that is, I expected to eat just Mexican American food. However, when I saw Cochinita Pivil on the menu, I could not believe it! This is a very special Mexican dish, rare to find, if ever, in a Mexican restaurant. It was delicious, I highly recommend it. There are other very authentic Mexican dishes on the menu, not commonly found in other so called Mexican restaurants. The portions are very plentiful and the prices very reasonable. The personnel are friendly and attentive, including the owner. And if it wasnt enough, there is free 3-hour parking.Soon after, I took other guests, and they were quite impressed to find real Mexican food. Without a doubt, I will continue to bring guests to this restaurant.

Not the same as the original. Very sad to see. Oh the good old days of Carne Guisadas, and Guacamole Chalupas. Not sure which family member inherited the business, but it has a different vibe. The old Tamale House on Airport was the spot. No AC to keep prices low (with a note posted on wall to explain the reason...lol). It had real character, and good prices. Old Austinites were always there. I understand prices go up, but not like this, and the charm is gone. I wish I knew which restaurant bought their old seasoned grill.

I absolutely hate tamales. Maybe I haven’t eaten a good tamale, I don’t know. My girlfriend LOVES them. So BOOM. We’re here at the tamale house. I order the tamale plate and a margarita with tajin around the rim. The margarita comes out and then the food soon after. I scarf that stuff down like I’ve never had food because It was so amazing. I had been lied to my entire life and I am so upset about it. I am now a fan. The only thing that slowed me down was the fact that I wasn’t given a spoon, but an oversight that I can forgive because the food was amazing. And then BAM, the buzz from the margarita sets in after the great food. Ugh, an amazing experience.PS,Get queso on your tamale and thank me later 10/10 would recommend

Great location tucked away on 6th street east of IH-35. Workers were very kind and willing to assist. I ordered the chicken taco and the attendant allowed me to switch out the flour tortilla for corn. Tacos are a decent size for the price, they add a slice of tomatoe and avocado which enhanced the flavor; however, the actual chicken and the broth it was cooked in was slightly under seasoned. Great overall experience and the decor of the restaurant was rather uplifting.

I’d never had a bad tamale, until I ordered from Tamale House. At first I was excited when I saw how huge they were — they reminded me of the Oaxacan tamales I used to get at the Maxwell Street market in Chicago. But as soon as I unwrapped the tamale, the smell hit me and I knew something was off. It smelled and tasted like someone accidentally dumped an entire bottle of cheap garlic powder into the masa. I tried my best to make it palatable but nothing I could douse it with could cover that taste. I’ve never experienced a tamale so inedible in my life. Unfortunately I ordered two of those beasts and had to throw them out. Sadness. 😢I’m giving two stars because the enchiladas were ok, not great, small portions, but atleast I had something edible. And the customer service seemed fine. Maybe their other food is great, but tamales at a place named Tamale House should kinda be the best thing on the menu, right?

Mixed experience here at Tamale House. We came in for breakfast on the 4th of July. Surprisingly, it wasnt busy. We sat outside and their huge patio space is super eclectic and funky, but really cool. Mixed seating, interesting decorations, and just a cool vibe. Lots of coverage too, so even if its raining a little, youre all good. You view the menu and order your food through a QR code. Its an interesting option, and makes getting your order in easy, but I do miss the experience of actually talking to a server and asking for recommendations. Doesnt lose them a star or anything, just not my preference.Food....I got the chipotle migas, and added chorizo. It was really good. The tortillas had a great crunch, full of flavor, and just generally tasty. I definitely dipped my tortillas in the drippings when I was done (which, on the tortillas, go with the flour over the corn). Breakfast potatoes had a nice seasoning and the refried beans were good.My wife got the Chilaquiles and they were ok. Not super flavorful and the fried tortilla chips were soggy and lacking any crisp. It is also done in a Verde salsa, which is just not how I like my Chilaquiles personally.Oh, and all the food came out in sealed plastic to-go containers. Definitely took away from the presentation. This could be a Covid thing though, and if so I get it.Overall, it was a good experience. Id probably go back for a quick and relaxed breakfast if I lived here and had more time. Wouldnt add it to a list of must-see locations if youre visiting Austin though.

Menu on site is very clear and has a couple options for both. Food was quick to arrive and tasted authentic, but my order was slightly incorrect. Wasnt a big deal and enjoyed it anyway. Not sure if its the time of day or adapting to the growth in the area, but the guest demographic and lack of ranchera makes me somewhat question if this is still a traditional mexican restaurant.

I’ve been her twice in the last month and just not a good experience. First time ordered breakfast tacos for pickup, came 10 minutes after they were supposed to be ready. Had to wait an additional 30 minutes before getting food. So I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and try this place for dinner. Same experience if not worse. Ordered drinks, some queso, and main entrees. Well food didn’t start to appear until an hour after ordering. What’s worse is that the starter queso never arrived. We told the wait staff multiple times we still have not received the queso. Ended up eating our entrees and still waiting. Decided it was enough and just left with no queso and waisting $9.00. I understand there is a lot of difficulties with restaurants right now but it was just a frustrating experience. Nothing negative against the food we received. Just the prices we paid for the experience we received was enough to make me never want to revisit.

BREAKFAST REVIEWCame here for breakfast when I was in town visiting a friend as it was close to his place. It was a great start to the day. This is one of those neighborhoody, family-owned spots (family-owned and operated since 1958) where you can just tell that people are regulars. You wait in line at the counter to order and then take a seat in the interestingly decorated dining room (or outside in the garden) to wait for your food. We sat on this plush red chair/bench.FOOD:I order the migas breakfast plate which came with potatoes and refried beans (potatoes were nothing special but everything else was great). I have learned to love migas on my time here in Austin and this certainly helped with that. I used the delicious tortillas to make tacos for myself. Being the Tamale House, I of course had to get the pork tamale, which was also great. I will say, every time I get a tamale, I wish there was more meat to the corn since you end up just getting big bites of the corn on the corners but it was still delicious. I suppose thats how an authentic tamale is made.SERVICE: Quick and friendlyPRICE: I was FULL for under $15...thats a deal!Would definitely make this a regular place if I lived in Austin.
