TLDR: coffee that’s both very good and very expensive.I had an iced latte. It was among some of the best I’ve had in Austin very impressed overall with it. However, after tax & tip, it was over $7, which is a *lot* to be spending on a cup of coffee. I was very happy with what I got, but doubt I’d return based on cost alone.

I feel like I might just be missing the point of this overpriced and sometimes too-serious coffee chain. The coffee tastes just fine but given how many places in Austin offer espresso for less than $2, I feel like the $4 you pay at Houndstooth is a little steep. Be prepared to pay $6+ for a latte!

Very trendy coffee shop. The coffee has a unique flavor that has a nice bite to it but not bitter like some shops. There are not a lot of flavor options here so those who like their grande 5 pumps vanilla chai with two sugars and a swirl of caramel should avoid this place. My only complaint was all of our drinks were not as hot we’d like

So you want to have some good coffee at Austin but dont quite know where you want to go? Well, if you would be so kind for me to recommend Houndstooth Coffee! These guys have been so consistent since Ive came across them in 2015. I had tried their coffee by french press. Little did I know this coffee would be really good (like seriously, no sugar or cream needed) but them it would be so strong too that my head literally started to hurt! So in the past years, came here quite sometimes to either have some coffee and relax or to study. Though they do not offer the french press, they still have the honor of serving you their pourover coffee, featuring various coffee roasters! Each time, they have not failed me and my friends/family. Theyre folks that respect the artisan component of coffee! But dont get mad at me when you have a higher bar and cant have other coffee, thats my job. :)

This is a great coffee shop to hang out at, work on your laptop, and sip delicious high quality coffee grown on the slopes of volcanoes half a world away. Yet somehow this place never feels pretentious even as you spend $7 on a latte. Part of the reason for that is that the people who come here are down-to-earth Austin folks. And the people who work here are the same way.

Absolutely horrible coffee!! It’s like they use a sweet bean or something? What an awful after taste. We wanted to try something other than our normal Starbucks and we regret the decision. We got a latte and an americano. Two items you really can’t go wrong with. And I must say It’s the worst coffee I’ve ever tasted. Please save your money. Your better off going around the corner to the Peete’s coffee. Because this place was just awful.

The coffee: The cortado was very mild. It didnt have any particularly strong flavors. It was light bodied, and kind of fruity. There was some chocolatey notes. Overall it was just very mild, but not necessarily milky. $4.60 for a cortado is really steep. Its definitely the most expensive cortado I have gotten. Considering the small size of the drink, I would say its a. It unreasonable, especially factoring in the overall just mild taste. The service: The baristas are very friendly, making casual conversation with you and telling you about the different beans they use and that you can choose from. The shop: It was very spacious, with different types of seating. You can find places to eat, talk, or work with table, bar, and couch seating. I liked the modern look and feel of the place.Overall: The service and atmosphere save this place. The coffee is too bland to be memorable, and is definitely not worth the steep price. Perhaps try the tea?

Have a lot of great things to say about this place. this is a great place to read a book, study, meet up with friends, or just grab a coffee to go. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about coffee. Everything is super clean and quick. All of the windows provide a lot of natural sunlight, which also makes you feel like a part of the city. I love using this as a stopover place while touring around town. I live in Houston but went to school and Austin and when I visit every minute counts. I absolutely love what it looks like inside. A lot of wood, brick, black and white. A little industrial. That being said, it has a lot of warmth. the space is very versatile, I can be very picky about coffee shops based on my mood and this one almost always fits the bill. Stop by. Totally worth it.

Houndstooth Coffee is a quaint little coffee shop. Although there were people sitting and drinking coffee, there was no wait when I visited. I ordered a cappuccino for here, and found a table to read my book (and later, write this review). In a few minutes, my drink was ready, and the barista came over to my section of the counter to deliver my drink instead of announcing it and leaving it next to the machine, which was a nice touch. I didnt order any alcoholic beverages (12PM on a Sunday), so I wont be discussing that part of their business. At the counter, there is no obvious menu. Call it hipster or homey or whatever you want, but it makes you feel good when a business trusts you to know enough about coffee to order correctly. For the uninitiated coffee drinkers, there are some paper menus near the entrance. That being said, there is a small board near the register with some coffee specials, such as coffee drinkings with sparking water and specially sourced, limited availability roasts. My cappuccino was excellent-one of the best I had in Austin. The proper size, not sour, and with some classic latte art for those that care about those things. The mug was also adorable, with a little Texas on it. The wifi was fine, and my table had an outlet. There are a bunch of 2-seat tables, one table for 8, and then 2 couches facing each other. Given that that 8-seat table likely gets taken, this isnt a place I would go to hang out with more than 3 or 4 people. There was also outdoor seating available, but with no real awning other than the one connected to the building. I wouldnt want to sit there in the Texas Summer. If you do, though, there is water available at the counter.I ended up getting a second cappuccino during this visit. Each one cost ~$4.60 at the time I wrote this, which is, well, high. However, I was not disappointed, and you will not be either. I probably wont come here often as it is a bit far from me, but if you live in the area this is likely one of, if not the best, coffee shops in the area.Oh, and it is next to Tacodeli too. Which is also excellent (although I have not been to this location). I could spend all day in this strip mall if I wanted :)

Was that espresso?Do they use espresso beans?! The espresso tasted fruity and watered down, after 2 sips trashed it. The Doppio I ordered, the barista proceeded to pour milk into the espresso cup (why), not the same, really. She then proceeded to make excuses and possibly didn’t know how to make a Doppio. It’s 2 shoots (2oz) of espresso, nothing more, and nothing less. You’re better off going to Starbucks or 711.

By no means am I a coffee snob. Starbucks is fine. Independent shops are more for me. Houndstooth takes things to a higher level than most regarding how seriously they take their coffee. For iced coffee, which I prefer black, its a little acidic for my taste. My wife loves it. It gets cold real fast with the crushed ice --a nice touch. The hot coffee is more my choice from Houndstooth, with each ordered cup made with weighed beans and timed French Press. Its not a good place for a quick in-and-out, but it is perfect for someone looking for high quality coffee made with care. Its a little pricey, but again youre not just grabbing a regular coffee. Their coffees take more time and effort than the typical coffee shop. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 simply for the fact that Im not a huge fan of the iced coffee. Everything else, including the hipster decor, is cool.

Houndstooth has made me rethink what I look for in a great coffee place. So many coffee shops in town feature fancy espresso drinks with their flavored syrups, organic sweeteners, nutmeg, cinnamon and foaming milk. Its easy to lose sight that at the core of any great espresso drink the most important factor is the espresso beans: their quality, taste and flavor. Houndstooth offers a seasonal variety of espresso beans with different flavor profiles; you select your beans and then your drink. My espresso latte tasted so great, it didnt need any form of sugar or artificial sweetener.

Review №80

Of all of the coffee places Ive tried in Austin, Houndstooth has some of the most delicious brews. Their bright, inviting decor, welcoming staff, and spotless environment all make for a great little coffee shop to add the list. However, there are three big reasons I cant give this five stars:- Loud to the point of distraction. I am the type to take my work to a coffee shop on the weekend to get out of the house, sip coffee, and people watch a bit. Unfortunately, I can only get To-Go from this location because the contemporary design (hard surfaces) with no acoustic paneling or anything to absorb the sound combined with the crowds of people means that I would probably have to invest in some noise-canceling headphones to tolerate it.- Lack of Flow. The design of the interior lacks intuitive flow - from the point of sale to where you pick up your drinks, its a complete and utter cluster. No one knows where to stand, youre bumping into other people waiting, tripping over people sitting, wandering through sitting areas to try to make room for the line of people still trying to order. Theres only one entrance/exit, so youre stuck until your drink comes up and the room is filled up with chairs and tables to the point that there is zero room for people who are just waiting for their To-Go drink.- Parking & Location. The parking situation is hectic for those that cant walk here locally. With Taco Deli and Uchiko being next door, it can get rather crazy trying to get in and out of here with a vehicle, and being on a main road doesnt make it any easier.

Staff is nice, coffee was okay, but for a cafe with as many locations as they have in Austin and Dallas, youd think the layout would be better. The cashier is in one corner and in order to get your food and drinks you have to walk in between people in line.. and theres no overhead menu or visible trash can. The coffee bar where you dress up your coffee is TINY, like barely even one person can use it. Might come back not during a next door tacodeli rush hour to try a different coffee, as they have different kinds available.

Boy, do these people love their coffee and it shows. Ask about the new coffees they have in stock, and they will run you down the complete flavor profile. If Starbucks is on my route I can rely on them to make a solid brew, but Houndstooth Coffee is always worth a detour. The house coffee is delicious, but I recommend trying out the new grinds that are always changing. If the coffee house crowd isnt your cup of tea, and the crowd here truly runs the stereotypical gamut, a to-go coffee will do just fine.

An Austin original, Houndstooth is a coffee aficionados paradise, dolling out a variety of fine espresso, pour over, house brew, expertly frothed lattes and cappuccinos, and a tasty variety of pastries. A great place to sit and study or work, and an even better date spot. The large open windows, organic wood interior, custom mugs, and occasional mustache-clad barista complete a refined cafe aesthetic fit for business executives and bearded hippies alike. Clean, modern, effective, and calming—that’s the winsome ambience Houndstooth is known for. This little shop always treats me right! I give it 4/5 only because my favorite coffee shops are generally more relaxed, with a raw, organic aesthetic, less focused on sheen and clean traits, prioritizing a homey vibe that feels less stiff and more comfortable.
