I love this place but pretty much have had an unpleasant taste/experience with every barista except the nice blonde haired lady and the young red haired man (forgive if crude description). Refuse to think its personal. Maybe Im the one who is being judgmental or maybe its the masks. Music sometimes feels misplaced and too loud also. Solid spot, though.

Awesome cafe, diverse selection of drinks and treats, for after a late night where you want an early morning pick-me-up. The vegan peanut butter cup, black bean pickled cactus and potato taco, and the Scarlet Letter, a spicy dark hot chocolate, were a blessing of bits of goodness that woke me right up.The atmosphere is also great, a quieter cafe with a lot of people working, so this is a great place to spend a few hours hunkered down and snacking/refueling throughout.

The worst staff attitude and treatment of regular customers of any establishment In Austin. Great coffee and tacos. New hires would make this a 5 star so quick. I will say as I’ve been 100 times that there is one shift out of like 5 that is nice and def the reason for the good reviews.I just watched the female staff member yell at a man in front of everyone bc he parked with his tire over the line the handicap (bc their was no where else and had his wife / gf stay in the car to move it). Disgusting behavior every time. I still go cause it’s close hahah

I used to really like studying here but they now require a new WiFi code every 3 hours which you can only get one with a purchase. So not only is my studying interrupted, but I have to go buy another item which is hard on a student budget. Their WiFi is also pretty slow and crashes pretty often. They will also sometimes play music really loud to the point where I could barely hear the people next to me and when I ask them to turn it down a little bit, they don’t. The big pros is that their iced bennu is good and they have plenty of outlets but it still doesn’t make it worth it to study here. I would recommend studying somewhere else if you need internet or need to focus.

Ridiculous! You have to order outside at a window, which is fine, but while I was standing ALONE outside reading the menu on the wall, an employee cracked the window and told me to put a mask on. I told him I would before I actually approached the window. Then he asked for a tip when I was paying. The order is set on a table next to the door and youre instructed not to approach your order until the door is closed. If they are that terrified of Covid they should probably stay safely in their homes with the doors locked.

Extremely rude barista demanded I put my mask on at a walk up outdoor coffee window. Mind you the state mandate has been lifted the mandate, I’m completely vaccinated, numbers are down and he had on a mask/behind a window. People using COVID as a power trip. And business that hide behind “Keeping our staff safe” isn’t sufficient. He was safe as stated, he was behind a window, and had on a mask. If you are that worried stay closed and don’t be in public. It’s time to move forward.

Review №23

I successfully ordered my steamed cold brew coffee and scone after carefully studying their lengthy instructions at the door. After a few minutes at my table, I see a seat by the window and decide to move so I can read more easily because the lighting in the place is rather dim. I pick up my bag, book, and the rest of my stuff and walk over there. The guy behind the counter gestures towards me to wear my mask by covering his face with his hand as he flails his other arm in the air in frustration. There is no one within 20 ft of me and Ive been fully vaccinated against covid. The baristas are both behind plexiglass and I have my hands full as I finish my 10 ft walk to my new table. As I sit down, the other barista prepares to express her dissatisfaction with my behavior. As she begins to speak, I cant help but feel that she enjoys this type of thing. Sir, you need to wear your mask. You are welcome to take it off when seated but when you stand, I need you to wear it. I began to mumble to explain that Ive been vaccinated but it occured to me that explaining would get me nowhere. I decided to say nothing further. It got even worse. Their next victim was a man who was placing an order. He pulled his mask down to help the barista understand him. Sir there is no need for you to pull your mask down. The barista said sharply behind the plexiglass. If they didnt do this to people, I might have enjoyed the scone and steamed cold brew more. Its an interesting idea but it also kind of tasted like play-dough. Im a first-time visitor to Austin so who knows. Maybe this is what people do around here? Maybe these baristas are not aware that a few blocks away there are thousands of people gathering inside and outside at local bars without any masks whatsoever. Maybe they are not aware of the latest covid case counts, CDC guidance, or plummeting death rates. To each their own, its their business and based on this experience I would prefer to not participate in it. If this type of environment is appealing to you, then have at it. The line will be shorter if people like me stay out.

Review №24

Great spot if you like covid theater. Order outside (where it’s proven the covid spread is massively reduced) wear a mask and talk through plexiglas and then pick up your drink from an alternate location outside where you also wear a mask and wait for the barista to fully close the door. Also when your outside (not even in line) make sure u wear your mask. 500 cases of covid in a metro area of 2 million ppl. All vulnerably populations have had the ability to get the vaccine. The CDC, the city and the state have encouraged a return to normal life. Not these folks!I respect a businesses right to their own rules but I’ll buy my coffee from somewhere else.

This summer has been so hot and all I’ve been craving is a dang iced cappuccino. You’d think this is a typical order, but most coffee shops in the city have turned me away, even scoffing at the thought of such a request. TLDR: Good coffee, Covid safe, staff seems friendly but unaccommodating at this location, I dont like the new internet system.Came in during Covid for their very limited seating and it seemed they take appropriate precautions. Bennu used to be my favorite coffee shop in Austin, and I still LOVE the new location up north. However, not a fan of my experience here at MLK. Their new wifi system requires that you input a new code every 3 hours. This code is provided when you purchase, and can only be used on ONE device. At the MLK location, they are strict about only providing one code with each purchase. I find this frustrating because I normally sit down and buy a variety of things at different intervals throughout the day (usually a couple things for breakfast, and then a couple things for lunch). However, even if you buy multiple things in one purchase, you get one code so I cant get on multiple devices, and if you need a code after having ordered before but perhaps before lunch time, you need to buy your lunch or snack in advance? Or just buy one thing at breakfast instead of my usual and space out my orders... Does not seem like a good system for a location whose primary customer base is UT Students and young professionals. I found that I would have stayed longer and purchased more if I didnt have to worry about my internet timing out and when I should schedule my next purchase. Finally gave up and went home to work where I know I have reliable wifi. Staff was friendly but not particularly attentive, accommodating, or welcoming.

I definitely recommend going to Bennu if you like the Austin and college town vibe. Bennu is extremely close to the UT campus so their are tons of UT students who go there, especially during mid-term and finals time. I tend to go there at night time because, if I remember correctly, they are open all night long. I have spent many long nights here getting a lot of work done just because the atmosphere is so calm that it helps my productivity. One thing about it is that when it does get crowded, its hard to get your hands on an outlet so make sure you go with a fully charged battery. I also love the options they have for drinks. I tend to only drink tea, but I feel like that have a pretty wide variety of drinks so that I am never stuck drinking the same thing over and over. Whatever your needs are, whether its to study or to grab a quick pick-me-up I think that Bennu is a close and convenient option.

This is a hidden jewel of Austin. Think of a coffee bar in a funeral home, but that is not a critique. People go there to work, read, browse the internet, anything but talking. 50 people can be in there and you wont hear a peep. If you want a place to focus, this is it! And its opened 24/7, how cool is that. Buzz all night long.Coffee is good! Not quite a 5, which would be on the level of Summer Moon, but consistently good. Depth of flavor to the brew, latte foam is a work of art and has substance to it. Not just an add-on like a chain would give you.Staff is a 3, meaning as the French would say correct. They are not rude nor warm, not interested nor indifferent. But again, you go there for the coffee and a comfortable place to work NO distractions.

Convenient if you live near here - its nice to have a local 24hr coffee shop around. We had been planning to order coffee and leave but they wanted us to leave the food outside. It was kind of ridiculous so we just left), but I keep going back anyways. Sometimes the music choice is great (90s hip hop or R&B), other times it is terrible (noise genera). Chairs are comfortable but sometimes this place is packed and its hard to find somewhere to sit.

I am a real coffee aficionado, I mean, I have my beans overnight shipped from Vienna and grind them myself with a mortar and pestle. Coffee making is a transcendent art and to me should bring the consumer a direct connection to God, the universe, oneness, what have you. Baristas are up there with the Dali Lama. They’re up there with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their work is an asset to a shift in global consciousness. This said, my boyfriend recommended I get an iced cappuccino. I immediately thought, “blasphemy! You are a coffee sinner,” but I tried it, and with my first sip, St. Peter opened the gates to heaven inside my mouth. I transcended, beyond the visions of St. Francis and Theresa of Avila. My whole body was in ecstasy. If you do one thing, please, get the iced cappuccino at Bennu this summer.

The staff can be very hit or miss. I came here once for a late night study session and they were blaring some noises over the speaker that sounded like metal scratching on metal, it wasnt even music, on full blast. It was anxiety-inducing, like an animal screaming, the sounds of which are supposed to be the exact opposite of what a coffee shop vibe should be. I was so sure the staff would gladly change it, and I asked as nice as I possibly could to have them change the song. I was met with an extremely rude No as if the staff knew someone would ask and they just wanted to see the look on their face. I left and never came back since. Before this incident, they were your normal, solid, coffee shop.
