It is so refreshing to have people who actually know what theyre doing. I had 5 different yacht mechanics and the manufacturer come to my boat to find a leak and nobody knew what was what. Ken Closs knew immediately what the problem was and Shelter Island Boatyard fixed it quickly, properly and at a fair price. I will only do my yacht business with Shelter Island Boatyard and their people.

Came here initially for a haul-out survey. Was impressed, came back for a simple transducer installation and was even more impressed with that installation. The yard chose to use a beautifully varnished block of wood behind the transducer instead of the factory supplied one because they knew it wouldnt swell if there was ever a leak. Came back recently for a bottom job and am so pleased that theres the best in the business on hand for any job. I would recommend this yard to absolutely anyone!

I have been going to Shelter Island Boat Yard and there seems like there is no job that they can’t do. If you need bottom painting, Yacht work, major and minor repairs, then this may be the boat yard for you.

I checked all over town for bottom painting. Shelter Island was almost half of the other quotes, and they did a fantastic job. While I was there, I got a paint estimate for some other areas. Cant say I recommend them for that. The estimate was $9,000 for what took my friend and I about ten hours to do later ourselves. I am an attorney and feel guilty about my hourly rate - clearly I need to reevaluate how little I charge.

We had our boat hauled out for repairs and bottom paint. Hands down the best experience we have ever had with boat repairs and maintenance! Friendly, timely, on budget, no shenanigans! Office staff was kind and helpful. The trades that we were referred to by Wayne were top shelf. Ian & Wilson MacDonald were wonderful to work with and performed awesome repairs at a fair price. Ken Closs was super helpful and the work his team performed was top notch, timely and cost effective. I Cannot remember the name of the painter that Wayne introduced us to, same outcome as the other trades, great work and fair price. Finally Capt. Tom of Ocean View Marine services was a joy to work with. Thank you all for an amazing experience.

Excellent, straightforward, and fast. I worked with Scott and his staff for a customers sailboat to get repaired and to two weeks later bring it back for haul out, prep to be trucked to the east coast. Very fair, honest, efficient and great folks to work with. Among the best if not the best boatyard around. Highly recommend it. Scott is exceptional, as are the rest of the team.

Spent 3 weeks on the hard there. It was a little long for a bottom job on a 30 ftr but I wasnt charged lay days and the work was good and they did a great job So I have no complaints and would recommend them without a problem. All the folks in the yard were very helpful with advice and even loaning tools(cost me a twelve pack). Highly recommend it

I am the owner operator of. Yacht Delivery and Yacht Maintenance Business. I hauled my personal boat at Shelter Island Boat Yard for survey and bottom maintenance in April 2014. After a lifetime of bad experiences in Boat Yards on the west coast, I am happy to say that Shelter Island Boat Yard is the singular positive experience that I have had. The work was done properly, efficiently all while providing extraordinary customer service.Imagine my surprise when I was handed my bill and it was precisely what the estimate of repair had been, (TO THE PENNY)!A year after the work was done, I had a polite professional discussion with Wayne, (the yard foreman) about the bottom paint not wearing as well as I thought it should. His commitment to customer service impressed me so much that I will be taking my boat back to Shelter Island Boat Yard in the next couple of weeks for bottom painting. The trip from Long Beach to Shelter Island will take me about 15 hrs. Involve a hotel room stay and other expenses. I think that says it all...R. K. Ouellette, Capt.

Best boat yard in So Cal. The prep done before painting the bottom is amazing and all included in one price. The yard is full of independent shops to assist and any repairs one might need. Wayne, Scott, Hilda and Jan are very attentive with all your need.

Wayne, Terry, and the rest of the guys have been a pleasure to work with. The pricing is fair, the work is good, the yard is efficient, and they have every resource you would need. The attention to detail is rare, as is the level of customer service. Wayne once went searching for some hard to find 20 gauge shrink tubing so I wouldnt have to order it on the internet.

Almost a year ago Shelter Island Boatyard soda blasted the bottom of Zeta, a 44 foot steel trawler, and per Pettit paint applied a new barrier coat then bottom paint.Twenty plus months latter the barrier coat started to blister, separating from the steel. Wayne had Zeta hulled out to evaluate the situation. He called in Pettit, they indicated it was not their fault.Wayne said no matter what the paint experts said, the boatyard would stand behind the work that had been done.To his word, Zeta was hulled out, the bottom granite blasted, multiple layers of Emron barrier paint applied, then the bottom paint. In the end, the cost of a complete bottom job was that of the new zincs!I would not hesitate to return to Shelter Island Boatyard and have enjoyed working with them.

Shelter Island Boat Yard, and specifically Wayne, failed on every single level a business should be judged by in my opinion. I own and run a business myself, and I do it well by supplying my clients with a couple of things: Facts and care.We were sold a pile of lies and junk about what they could and would do for us, and guess who is left with the bill??#1 was the scheduling: They tried to tow our boat weeks ahead of schedule, and would have,if not for a kayak in the way(we were assured by Wayne that since our engines were undergoing repairs, the mile or so tow would not be a problem EACH WAY).I was called and texted by captain tomasking me to please come move the kayak so our boat (home) could be towed. I instead called Shelter Island Boat yard, and after a while of confusion, they realized they had made an error. So if not for our lazy kayak placement, we would have come home to an empty slip..#2 customer service, There is no communication from wayne unless you track him down on site. If I had not ran all over that boat yard at all times of the day and night asking questions, I would NEVER HAVE KNOWN ANYTHING about what was going on, how things were progressing, whether or not we were going to have to be there for TWO EXTRA DAYS, or anything else, and I have zero doubts that we would have been there for several MORE days had I not been there.#3 quality of work: We were plugged up to their power (which we were assured was completely fine), and the day we were dumped in the water at 5:01 pm, we had a BIG electrical issue. The power had been surging and going on and off for the entire time we were there, but Friday morning all of a sudden my new battery charger was offline and would not come back on,plus the house battery was dead(both the battery and charger were less that 3 months old at this point).Judging by how much trouble we had been having with the power there, I thought they may help us try to figure out the issue.Especially since we were still sitting in the boat yard having done absolutely nothing. After tracking down Wayne, who once again assured me that we work until after dark here! We will get you back to Harbor island well before then A maintenance guy came for less than 5 minutes and poked around, then said he would send one of the electricians up to take a look. I waited 5 hours for that person to come up, and they never did. Wayne seemed quite annoyed that I would even question whether what he said would come to pass simply because people were still painting my boat.By 5pm when they started moving my boat toward the water, there were 3 or 4 guys left in the boat yard, and they were all moving my boat. The office was CLOSED, nobody was there. Wayne was gone from his office, scott gone from his. I went back to where the guys were launching my boat and one of them told me in a hushed voice that captain tom had just left, and that me and my wife were being dumped right there below the boatyard without any explanation, apology, ELECTRICAL HELP(WE HAD NO POWER, EVEN WHEN WE TRIED TO HOOK UP TO THE SHORE POWER THERE!), and nobody would be back to speak with us about this broken agreement until Monday. It was 5:01 pm. Wayne had LIED right to my face 5 hours earlier, telling me I need not worry,he would take care of EVERYTHING. There were three things we discussed, the electrical(nothing was done), getting launched today(the only thing that was done),and being towed back to our marina just one day late(Something he promised).I called wayne and despite his seeming GENUIN CONCERN mere hours earlier, he was literally laughing and incredibly sarcastic when I described to him our situation. His bottom line: Our boat was painted, our boat was in the water, end of story. Mine: If I had known what his level of commitment was to our seriously humble needs,we NEVER would have gone there(he knew well how much we needed the tow). We stayed in a hotel room friday night since we had no power thanks to SIBY. We had a friend tow us home Saturday. There are also issues with the paint itself!

Ive hauled out and work done at Driscoll, Khoeler, and Shelter Island Boat Yard. Ive worked as a charter captain in Americas cup harbor, own/operate/liveaboard a Hans Christian, and work as a skipper for a sport fisher so factor that in regarding my opinion. Additionally Ive lived in San Diego for over twenty years, and am over on the Shelter Island peninsula almost every other day.Without a doubt, Shelter Island Boat Yard is the best place that I know of to haul your boat and get work done. There are some smaller yards that I havent worked with yet, but putting Khoeler on the bottom of the list (walk around town asking people their opinion to figure that one out for yourself) you then get up to Driscoll which although not bad simply doesnt come close to the professionalism, care, and service of Shelter Island Boat Yard.Wayne and Scott (the foremen) are honest, helpful, and not going to rip you off. The yard works by outsourcing everything except bottom paint and the haul/block/launch itself out to tenants, which are the businesses that are clustered around the yard. If you want a quote for topside paint, you work with the two painter tenants in the yard. If you want diesel work, you talk to Pac West (the engine folks), etc. The foremen can point you in the right directions and help you with any questions. Its a boat yard, not an upscale French bistro, so its inherently a little rough around the edges. But in the maritime world its rare to see professionalism and customer service, so Shelter Island Boat Yard is hard to beat. Unless you have some very specific reason, go there for your haulout needs.
