Lovely little shop. Staff was super friendly and they were having a special event but were not too busy for us. We actually walked in because there was a display of candles on a table outside and we were glad we came in! There are also some other fun items beyond what you would expect like loads of reusable tote bags. :)

Beautiful display of yarn. Many variety of yarn, even locally dyed ones. This place is an oasis from the busy streets. As soon as you walk in, you will hear the relaxing music, and the yarn helps drown out the street noise. The staff is friendly and open to chatting about yarn, which is always good. Id recommend coming here for a unique find of colorway.

We happened upon this shop as we were roaming the neighborhood around the Natural History Museum. It is a small shop, so they can only allow a handful of people in at a time. My 12 yr. old daughter wanted to go in, but I was feeling guilty we would occupy two of those spots when my daughter is not a serious knitter. In order to speed my daughter along I encouraged her to ask them for a simple project suggestion. The employee that my daughter talked to sat her down at the table, showed her websites where she could find some simple but cool patterns and suggested a few favorites. My daughter was very excited and picked out two skeins of reasonably priced wool to get her started. We really appreciated the excellent customer service!I did not catch the name of the employee who helped my daughter, but we were there Saturday April 10th in the afternoon. There were two gentlemen and one woman working at the time, and it was the woman who helped us out.

Beautiful skeins but very rude and dismissive staff. The lady at the register didnt even look at me while I was talking to her! Ive tried to give this place multiple chances because I like supporting local yarn shops but some of them, like this one, have a very haughty atmosphere that makes you want to stay away.

There are lots of yarn shops all over the city but this one seemed to pop up even when I started my search with Brooklyn based shops. When I arrived, I found a cozy shop and Zac was the first to come up and offer help. He was great giving me space to browse and helping me think through a project I had that was still kind of half formed when I walked in the door. The yarn selection was broad and there was plenty for me to choose from with lots more in the back store room when I needed more quantity of some colors I chose. Zac was very easy going and the general atmosphere felt familiar and helpful and friendly. Needless to say, I would certainly come back to the UWS just to shop here again. The only thing I think was missing was a wide selection of needles but they had good ones available. That said, it was a selection on par with any other shop.I highly recommend Knitty City!

My husband and I took an introductory knitting class with Maxine about a year and a half ago. We were the only men in the shop other than Ubaldo (a wonderfully helpful employee) and we were welcomed all the same. The knowledge, resources, and skills she gave me in that class have kept me knitting for over a year. I have made scarves, blankets, sweaters, and lace shawls since then and Im still enjoying knitting and creating. Thank you very much to Maxine, Ubaldo, and all the wonderful staff at Knitty City!

Wherever I travel, I visit yarn stores. This is my favorite. The staff is always helpful without being pushy. Opera plays in the background and customers love it there. Honestly; I wish this was my local yarn store. And in a way; it is. They do orders for those of us who live far away. But the best is always coming in to see the lovely materials in person.

This was the first yarn shop I visited during my recent trip to NYC. I was greeted by a very helpful young woman. I wanted locally dyed yarn and she helped me with that. The store is small but don’t let that fool you. they have a great selection. A visually impaired young woman came into the store and the staff was very accommodating. They were so accommodating that the son who was helping out at the register walked the young lady to her next destination. Although that’s not knitting related it shows how thoughtful they are and how great their customer service is, something that was lacking from other shops I visited.

I signed up for a beginner knit class and I arrived five minutes late. After waiting for a few minutes at the desk with no one there, finally the owner asked what I needed. I asked if I could join the class and that I had signed up. The class very clearly had not started. Before I could show her my email she said the class was full (8 people) and maybe next time. The tone was really rude and dismissive. The weekend classes for beginners don’t run that often so I will be definitely going elsewhere. I just wish they were a little more welcoming- I am new to knitting and was really enthusiastic.

This place befuddles me... beautiful yarns, wonderful selection and very relaxing atmosphere when you walk in... I have gone there by myself, and with some friends and EVERY SINGLE TIME I find this place to be extremely unfriendly. I wonder why the majority of the people who work there (there are exceptions) act like school marms who make me feel like I am 5 years old. I am 61 and I have been knitting since I WAS 5 years old. I have easily knit 400 sweaters. Do you have to be part of the inner circle to feel welcome ? Can anybody explain to me what the secret handshake is????

This place is the perfect yarn shop. Easily the best one in the city and probably the entire Northeast. The staff is as nice and helpful as could be. I love to knit, and the store is well stocked with amazing and beautiful yarns. I made a huge mistake in my last review so Im rewriting it.The owner of Knitty City Pearl Chin is a delightful woman and very helpful. Her son and a young lady whom I think is her daughter are both wonderful well mannered people who have excellent customer service skills. There is one associate who can be a little pretentious and lacks etiquette that can spoil the experience.I will be going back because the store is close to home and well stocked.

This is one of my favorite yarn stores in NYC. There is so much yarn! The sales people are so nice and helpful, and there are tons of magazines and books. Im amazed at how much yarn they have been able to cram into that small setting. If youre a yarn aficionado you will love this place. They have all kinds, some more expensive than others. They even have roving, and an area for people to sit and knit while chatting. I definitely am going back there all the time for when I have a new knitting project in mind! If you havent been, I highly suggest going, just not at a very busy time.

The customer service has definitely improved within the past few years, I think they’re doing a better job of training their staff to be helpful. They have a good selection, but if you come on a weekend it’s hard to get close enough to the shelf to make a decision. I understand they’re probably dealing with NYC real estate prices, but I did just leave instead of buying something the other day as I got kind of fed up with threading my way between the shelves & the large table of people knitting. Also, they’re supposedly open until 8 on Thursdays, but when I tried to come in this evening there was a talk going on & they didn’t have the registers open. I continued uptown to Michaels.I really want to support local yarn shops, but I’ve had a few frustrating buying experiences in a row which has turned me off to going back.

I was on a visit to New York and decided to go by Knitty City on a very rainy day. It was like visiting friends - greetings were offered, knitters were working on projects, others were perusing yarns. I came in knowing what colors and weight, but wasnt sure which of my two choices were likely to knit up better and received great advice from Pearl (you should see this gorgeous scarf of Madeline Tosh yarn when its done!). They wound my yarn while I waited and invited me to come back anytime I was in town to sit and knit and visit again. I will definitely be back on future trips!

This is by far my favorite yarn store. Its a teeny place but its packed with everything you could want including the friendliest and most helpful and knowledgable salespeople around. The quality of their yarn is outstanding and they really know what theyre buying and selling. Ive never been disappointed.I wouldnt recommend going with a stroller or any kind of grocery caddy. If there are more than one of you in there, the whole store is gridlocked! Ive taken my niece and parked near the door and carried her around. Easier than wheeling!Just go! Now that its cooler and everyone needs a scarf, just go to this amazing little shop. So relaxing and youll never be bored on the subway again!

This place is located next to a coffee bar and near a book store... That by itself rocks! They offer loyalty cards with a 20% off coupon and a giant selection. Went to Knitty City today as part of my NY yarn pilgrimage. I found the staff incredibly friendly once we got into chatting about yarn and knitting, and it is such a welcoming space - perfect to just sit, peruse, think, and knit.If your preference is for sheepy yarns (as mine is) then this is not your Holy Grail, but it is still lovely. They have some American Shetland, Lopi, commercial alpaca and wool blends, and Mohawk wool. However, if youre into hand-dyed yarn then this place is for you. The range is huge (especially if you love Tosh and sock yarn generally)! Prices are par for the course - not particularly cheap nor expensive.
