We absolutely love stopping at The Old Pioneer Store. Brian and Carlleen are wonderful people! We love their ice cream and malts. Plus I love browsing the store for local crafted items. It’s a must see if your coming through downtown Big Rapids 😀

Great little shop. My husband and I wandered in, not expecting much more than chocolates and were pleasantly surprised. Theres a large gift area with some really cute things, and a nice selection of ornaments. The owner? was really nice, and gave us a sample of the delicious fudge. Bought an adorable owl, not that I was looking for one but couldnt resist!

Wonderful little shop, there are so many options for desserts and delicious ice cream. They were even making home made popcorn assortments, while I was there. Very polite owners and staff.

Have been here several times on our girls day shopping trips. A cute store and nicely presented. The employees have always been very helpful and very friendly. As another reviewer stated, I also feel things are over-priced. Every time Im in Ive found one or two small items in the adjacent room Id like for the garden or our cottage, but wasnt willing to pay the price. Would be nice to have some of those things at a better price point. We end up doing a lot of looking though.

I love The Old Pioneer, and have been a patron for many years. If they dont have what you are looking for (and they almost always do), all you have to do is ask and they will try to find it for you. The owners are more than accommodating. I read a review from a dissatisfied customer regarding kettle corn and ice cream. If this unhappy customer had just expressed their concerns they would not have been charged. The owners, Carlleen and Brian Rose, bend over backwards to ensure customer satisfaction.

I give it 3 stars because it has a Kilwins. The staff was extremely courteous. And its a beautiful store. I was hoping for more unique products that I cant find at a ton of other places. And the merchandise was way over priced.

The shakes & malts here are the best around. Not something I do all the time but its a fantastic way to treat yourself. Great unique gifts & cards, and if you need gift ideas (like oh maybe for a wedding that you need to be at in an hour) theyre super helpful. Best part, theyll wrap your gift for free and take care to make it look GOOD. Even went so far as to match wrapping paper with wedding colors. Ive never had a complaint in 20 years of going there, but if I did Im sure theyd do everything to make things right. Thanks for being a Big Rapids staple for, well, ever! :)Ps - if you want cheap ice cream the gas station has a chest freezer full.

In reading the last bad review this has got to be the same place that my husband and I went to on our vacation last week. We couldnt remember the name of it but we knew that the bag said Kilwins on it. Well let me tell you, do not fall for there kettle corn at the outrageous price of $4.00 a bag. My husband asked the girl behind the counter, who looked like she went to the local college, if it was really, truly, kettle corn and she answered yes every time he questioned her. She said she made it fresh. It smelled so good, and maybe it was all of the chocolates and candy in the room, but it smelled sweet and salty. So at a difference of two bites for $.75 versus a whole butt load at $4.00 we went for the larger option. Well to our complete and utter disappointment, it was just regular, boring, extra insanely salted, gross, stale, popcorn. Apparently this girl does not know what true kettle corn is! We both got one scoop of ice cream, one in a bowl and one in a cone, and a the other person with the bad review commented, there was so little ice cream given to us for the price that we paid! Our total for all three items was almost $15! Outrageous! And it wasnt even that good. My cone was so thin it practically crumbled in my hand. I questioned the girl as to the price and she broke it down for me. I wish I would have refused to pay for the pop corn. The only reason she said it was kettle corn was because she said the popper in the machine had broken so she had to make it the old fashioned way in a big kettle. We didnt realize that until it was too late. Well dont make the same mistake that we did. Stay away from the pop corn and ice cream unless you want to spend $15 for pure disappointment.

I love everything about this store, the very friendly staff, the abundance of unique ornaments, the Michigan items, along with the made in store fudge and other treats. My favorite is the malts, nothing beats a Kilwins malt any day of the week!
